Western Caribbean Cruise

This morning we anchored at Grand Cayman. Tom and I left on the first tender to catch the dive boat for the day. The rest of our group had a late breakfast and went shopping.

Tom and I did two dives. As is typical, the first dive is a deep dive with the second being much shallower.

The first dive was in an area of the reef that had coral canyons and  caverns. If was quite nice as we swam single file through the structures. The water here is much warmer and no longer requires a wet suit to remain comfortable. The first dive was 92 feet for 32 minutes. Water temperature 81 degrees.

The second dive had much more life around it. It was on a reef
called Paradise. I think every island in the Caribbean has at least one reef named as such. The reef had the remains of a large wreck on it. The wreck was an artificial reef sunk in the 80’s. However after 4 or so large hurricanes that tossed the ship back and forth, it is pretty much just a bunch of jumbled steel plates covered in marine growth.

The only recognizable section of the ship was the partially buried bow. The reef and ship were surrounded my much life both fish and coral. It was a very nice dive. Total bottom time 49 minutes at 52 feet.

Now from the rest of us -- Doug, Chris, Mark and me (Rob). We went into port around 10 AM using priority tender tickets - from Concierge Class. We stopped and looked at black coral jewelry. The men’s formal set-- cufflinks and four studs -- were gorgeous. They were only $1450 for the cufflinks and $400 for EACH stud. No, I didn’t get them.

Chris bought some trinkets, Mark a straw hat, and Doug some shirts and a refrigerator  magnet. Chris looked at some magnets for his refrigerator collection - if I recall he didn’t get any. We walked around town and browsed  lot - not too exciting. I did have cell phone coverage -- likely from one of the other ships. We don’t
have cell service on the Constellation - although it will be available the first week of March -- I talked to a ships’ officer - they’re working on it as I type. Maybe, just maybe, it will be available sooner than that. Otherwise I’ll only have coverage in the islands - sad.

All in all a very nice day on the island was had by all. Now I (that’s Bill)  am off to the Persian Garden for some much needed steaming. The pictures from our stay here are located off the Main Western Caribbean Cruise page, or just click here.
